Bayern's basketball team is nearly achieving the double.
Bayern Munich's basketball team is closing in on the title. In their second match, they put in another grueling performance to win against Alba Berlin in the Bundesliga (BBL) championship. The team, managed by Spanish coach Pablo Laso, now has a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series.
Wednesday night's game at Alba Berlin saw Bayern Munich take a 67-63 (31-28) victory, leaving them just one win away from taking the double. However, if they lose their next game on Friday (6pm/Dyn), the series will go all the way to game five in Munich on Sunday (5pm/Dyn). World champion Andreas Obst was the tournament's top scorer for the away team, netting 14 points. Nick Weiler-Babb, a national player, also excelled in a defensive capacity, scoring nine points and providing six assists. Matt Thomas was the top scorer for Alba Berlin, netting 17 points.
An Intense Final Phase
After Alba Berlin claimed a victory in the second game of the series on Monday, taking away Bayern's home advantage, Laso made some strategic changes that caused some initial problems for the Berliners. The game began with intense, physical defense from both teams. Bayern Munich struggled to score in the opening stages of the second quarter, but managed to build a nine-point lead.
However, that lead didn't last long as Berlin fought back and the game remained neck-and-neck at half-time. Throughout the second half, neither team could break the other's defensive wall, and the game remained close. The lead swapped hands six times in the third quarter. In the final quarter, Bayern Munich went on a 13-point run, almost securing the game, but Berlin fought back with a strong response of 10 points in a row. In the end, they couldn't match the four-point lead of the Munich team in a dramatic final phase.
