Bayern Munich player de Ligt ties the knot with his childhood love.
Six years ago, Bayern defender Matthijs de Ligt and Annekee Molenaar crossed paths. As the European Championship was about to begin, they planned nail appointments. However, the Champions League disrupted the wedding plans for the young couple.
First up, the wedding, then the EM: Bayern player Matthijs de Ligt tied the knot a few days before the start of the European Championship. On Instagram, the Dutch national team member shared pictures of the wedding along with his wife and "Vogue." According to the fashion magazine, the wedding with model Annekee Molenaar took place on June 7.
"It was impossible to plan a large wedding this summer with the EM in Germany," said the bride. "But we wanted to officially become husband and wife, so we celebrated in a small group with grandparents, parents, siblings, and witnesses."
De Ligt and Molenaar have been together since they were 18 years old and have been a couple ever since. In June 2023, de Ligt's proposal came. The "big Italian wedding" in Tuscany is expected after the civil wedding. De Ligt played for Juventus Turin in Italy from 2019 to 2022.
"We had to postpone everything at the last minute"
There wasn't much time left for celebration for the 24-year-old Dutch national team player. On his wedding day, he returned to the Netherlands' training camp. Tonight at 8:45 p.m. on ntv.de, there's the Dutch national team's last test match before the European Championship against Iceland.
"It's actually funny because the way the planning for our civil wedding went is a reflection of our relationship in general," said Molenaar in "Vogue." "At first, we planned to get married at the end of May, on our anniversary, but then it looked like Matthijs would make it to the Champions League final with Bayern Munich. So, we had to reschedule everything at the last moment."
De Ligt is an integral part of the Dutch national team as a central defender. In Group D, he'll go head-to-head with the Netherlands against France, Austria, and Poland. Their first match is on June 16 in Hamburg against Poland (3 p.m., live on RTL).
