Bayern Munich has no plans to persuade Neuer to resume his position as the DFB's goalkeeper.
The recent injury of Marc-André ter Stegen has sparked renewed discussions about the potential return of Manuel Neuer to the German football national team's goalpost. Despite his recent resignation, Neuer's name is once again a hot topic. Interestingly, Bayern Munich is maintaining a tight-lipped approach about this matter.
Bayern Munich has not been actively discussing Neuer's possible comeback as their top goalkeeper. Coach Vincent Kompany stated, "We haven't talked about it for a second." Sporting director Christoph Freund added, "It's his personal decision. He's happy now because he's in good form. He's hopefully fit again now and has started the season well."
Neuer stepped down from the national team after Germany's quarter-final exit at the Euro 2020 against Spain (1:2 a.e.t.). However, with ter Stegen's severe injury, which will keep him out for several months, the idea of Neuer's return is gaining traction. Oliver Baumann (TSG Hoffenheim) and Alexander Nübel (VfB Stuttgart) are among the potential replacements being considered.
Nübel leads the race
Legendary goalkeeper Sepp Maier has expressed his support for Neuer's return to the DFB. He suggested that Nagelsmann should initiate discussions about this, stating, "The circumstances have changed with ter Stegen's injury." Maier, who himself had several comebacks in the national team, questioned ter Stegen's ability to return after such a long break. "If he has to pause for eight months now, I don't know how he will come back," he added.
Currently, Alexander Nübel is regarded as the favorite to take over the DFB goalpost. Nagelsmann has not yet made a public statement on the matter, but Nübel's chances appear to be high.
The upcoming international matches are scheduled for October 11 in Bosnia and Herzegovina and October 14 in Munich against the Netherlands. Nagelsmann will announce the squad for these games on October 3. Despite suffering from a thigh injury, Neuer is hopeful of being fit for the crucial match against Bayer Leverkusen this Saturday (6:30 p.m. / Sky and in the live ticker on ntv.de).
The Commission is yet to issue a statement regarding Neuer's potential return to the German national team, despite the renewed interest due to ter Stegen's injury. In light of ter Stegen's prolonged absence, there have been calls for The Commission to consider Neuer's case for a comeback.
