Bayern Munich's Beloved Trainer Thomas Wilhelmi Passes Away: At 57, the long-time conditioning and rehab coach passed away following a lengthy illness.
The football powerhouse Bayern Munich is heartbroken over the loss of Thomas Wilhelmi. As the club announced on Friday, the dedicated rehabilitation and conditioning coach passed away at 57 after a long battle with illness. He had been with the club since 2007 and witnessed, amongst other things, 13 German championships and two Champions League wins with the professional team.
The "board chair Jan-Christian Dreesen expressed the deep sorrow of the club, the care team, and the team with whom Thomas Wilhelmi had worked for such a long and intense period." Wilhelmi had made an "indispensable contribution to the acquisition of numerous titles during this long period." He was "always in tune with the players and always there for them, especially during injury phases, when performance athletes need the most motivation the most."
Stars like Bastian Schweinsteiger, Franck Ribery, Arjen Robben, and Manuel Neuer described him as "an essential support during rehab phases." At Bayern, he worked alongside coaching legends such as Jupp Heynckes, Louis van Gaal, Pep Guardiola, Ottmar Hitzfeld, and Carlo Ancelotti. Before his time in Munich, he had worked for Bayer Leverkusen. Wilhelmi remained part of the professional team's support staff during the recently concluded season.
"We will never forget him, his human as well as professional qualities. Thomas Wilhelmi will always be a part of the FC Bayern family. Our thoughts are with his wife and the two daughters," said Dreesen.
