Bayern Munich CEO Eberl elaborates on the reasons behind Tuchel's refusal.
Bayern Munich is currently without a coach for the upcoming season, and the possibility of retaining outgoing Thomas Tuchel has failed to materialize. Although Eberl, the head of sports at Bayern, remains confident that they will find a suitable candidate, he admits to feeling exhausted from the constant rejections.
In an interview with Sky television during the Bundesliga game at Hoffenheim, Eberl shared his sentiments, stating that they will find a great solution for the coach vacancy. However, he admitted that he had to reflect on his own actions as well, confessing, "I'm the one who is most dissatisfied with how things are going. I'll have to take a hard look at myself. Of course, you look in the mirror and ask if you made any mistakes."
On Friday, it was confirmed that there would be no change in Tuchel's departure at the end of the season. Already before that, potential coaching options such as Xabi Alonso, Julian Nagelsmann, Ralf Rangnick, and Oliver Glasner had fallen through.
Eberl had known for some time that Tuchel would not extend his tenure, and following the Real Madrid game, they had a discussion about a possible continuation. However, the manager did not reveal the reasons for their disagreement. When asked if the length of the contract had been an issue, Eberl replied, "It wasn't just about one aspect." Tuchel also declined to comment, stating, "That remains a private matter between us. We've discussed all potential outcomes, but we couldn't reach an agreement."
There has been speculation about the involvement of honorary president Uli Hoeneß in the coaching decision. In a public appearance not long ago, Hoeneß critiqued Tuchel's handling of youth development. Tuchel said, "He didn't need to apologize. I don't hold grudges."
Dietmar Hamann, a pundit for Sky, proposed Ange Postecoglou, the current Tottenham coach, as a potential new face at Bayern. Lothar Matthäus added Zinédine Zidane, a former world-class footballer and former Real Madrid coach, to the list. Eberl did not address these suggestions but revealed the pressures he's been experiencing during his tenure at Säbener Straße, saying, "I've been there for just ten weeks, and it feels like I've been there for a decade."
