"Bayern leader Eberl reprimands 'Raffzahn'"

Max Eberl, Bayern Munich's sporting director, expresses worries over the spiraling expenses in the transfer market. He warns of potential consequences if the trend continues.

Max Eberl, the sporting director for Bayern Munich, is keeping an eye on the professional football transfer market with unease. "Greed can be fatal to football," Eberl stated. "If all the money dries up, there's nothing left for us to work with."

Neymar's transfer from FC Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain for a record sum of 222 million euros in the 2017/18 season sparked debate, followed by Kylian Mbappe's transfer from PSG to Real Madrid without a release clause, which reportedly cost 150 million euros.

Eberl fearfully said: "Hundreds of millions are coming in. It's getting too big, and you feel like it might explode. Eventually, it'll be too much, and then Saudi Arabia steps in." The 50-year-old expressed his reservations, admitting, "It doesn't sit well with me, but that's the market now." Their record transfer is Harry Kane's move to Tottenham Hotspur last year for around 100 million euros in transfer fees. Eberl commented on this, saying, "I won't be celebrated if we finish fifth, but the bonus account has increased by that amount. We're trying to strike a balance."

Eberl also spoke about the consequences of transfers like Mbappe's. He cautious, "The money disappears from the market. No club benefits from it. Only players, families, and agents gain." In the past, Eberl added, "clubs would always reap rewards. The money would remain in the circulation, but that's happening less and less now."

Eberl doesn't want to be a part of the increasing sums of money but still desires success. At the event "The Future of Football" organized by "Sueddeutsche Zeitung" and "Stadion der Traeume Muenchen" as part of the 2024 European Championship's cultural program, he confessed his internal conflict. "As a sports manager, I'm in this dilemma."
