Baltimore's offensive line mentor Joe D'Alessandris passes away at 70 years old.
Recently, the team announced that D'Alessandris had been hospitalized due to a severe illness and would need prolonged treatment. John Harbaugh, the Ravens' head coach, revealed that D'Alessandris had undergone surgery earlier in the summer, and some complications had developed.
D'Alessandris has been a part of the Ravens since 2017, boasting a coaching career spanning 45 years. His journey included stints in the Canadian Football League, the World League, and college football, before transitioning to the NFL. He served as an assistant coach for the Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, and the then San Diego Chargers before joining Baltimore.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Harbaugh expressed his feelings, saying, "Coach 'Joe D' was a man of integrity and a man of faith. He improved us all. He was our reader during team mass and was adored by everyone here. He was an excellent coach and a good man – the kind of person you're proud to call a friend. I respected him, loved him, and will miss him, as 'Joe D' was a source of joy."
Following this, the Ravens recruited George Warhop to fill D'Alessandris' role on an interim basis.
On this sad day for the Baltimore Ravens, their general manager, Eric DeCosta, shared his sentiments, saying, "Today is a mournful day for the Baltimore Ravens. 'Joe D' was a rock, a great coach, and a better person. He cared about the team passionately, demonstrating an unyielding desire to succeed while showing genuine affection for his players. I cherish our conversations about football and life.
"I will always remember standing beside Joe on the practice field, observing him closely with his players. Coach was the epitome of a teacher and friend, and I will miss him deeply. Our thoughts and prayers go to Joe's daughters and family, and everyone impacted by Joe's extraordinary spirit."
Despite his health challenges, D'Alessandris' passion for sport remained undiminished, often offering insights and advice to his fellow coaches in the hospital.
Upon his recovery, D'Alessandris expressed his desire to return to the sport he loved, vowing to continue inspiring his team and sharing his wealth of knowledge.
