Ball loss shocks Frankfurt in key CL match

Behind FC Barcelona, Eintracht Frankfurt and Benfica Lisbon play for second place, which means progression in the Champions League. In Portugal, a ball loss by SGE captain Tanja Pawollek leads to the decisive situation. This increased the pressure enormously.

Eintracht Frankfurt's women's soccer team suffered a setback in the first of two key matches in the Champions League group stage. Coach Niko Arnautis' team lost 0:1 (0:0) at Benfica Lisbon in the Estadio da Luz and slipped to second-last place in Group A after the third matchday with three points. The Portuguese side (6) are now three points adrift.

Marie Alidou scored the winning goal in the 71st minute for the Portuguese champions, who dominated the game for long periods. The goal was preceded by a careless loss of possession by Frankfurt captain Tanja Pawollek in midfield. Eintracht were too passive overall and were barely able to create any chances. Instead, goalkeeper Stina Johannes saved the Hessians from a heavier defeat with several saves.

The Frankfurt side repeatedly made a number of mistakes and inaccuracies during the game - including in the sixth minute, when Johannes only just managed to scramble a misplaced back pass from international Sophia Kleinherne off the line. It was not until around the half-hour mark that the visitors got into the game better.

After the break, Arnautis' team could even have taken the lead, but Lara Prasnikar's (48) shot from a central position flew just over the goal. The match, which was shown by streaming provider DAZN as part of the men's Champions League conference, was now more open overall than in the first period. Benfica were a little closer to scoring. Johannes first made a strong one-on-one save against Alidou (51'), but 20 minutes later she had no chance when the Canadian shot from the edge of the box.

The second leg against Benfica will take place in Hessen on December 21 (18:45/DAZN). The direct duel is considered to be of great importance, as the two teams could decide who progresses behind the runaway leaders FC Barcelona. The defending champions (9) easily won 6:0 (3:0) at FC Rosengard, who still have no points. Only the group winners and runners-up will progress to the quarter-finals.

In the men's Champions League group stage, Eintracht Frankfurt's male counterpart is also in action, facing off against Benfica Lisbon in the second leg on December 21. The outcome of this match could be crucial for both teams, as it could determine who advances to the quarter-finals alongside FC Barcelona.
