Badly injured: NFL pro crashes into referee

Serious injuries are part of the football circus, but the victims are usually the players, some of whom are huge. But in New Orleans, an official is injured. The images are shocking, but the injury is probably relatively minor.

The NFL game between the New Orleans Saints and the Detroit Lions with the German-American Amon-Ra St. Brown was overshadowed by an accident on the pitch. In the second quarter of the game, referee Nick Piazza injured his knee on the sideline. After running back Alvin Kamara of the Saints fell on the sideline in a full sprint after being touched by an opponent, he collided with the football referee. According to the Saints, Piazza's kneecap popped out and his knee was dislocated. The spokesman did not confirm that the leg was broken, as several media reported on the basis of the TV images.

The referee - part of the so-called chain crew, who operate the 10-yard chain and the down markers on one of the sidelines - screamed in pain, the leg that the 100-kilo athlete Kamara had crashed into was clearly visible at the wrong angle. A shoe was also torn off his foot due to the force of the collision. Doctors from both teams immediately rushed to the injured man.

After he was fitted with an inflatable cast, Piazza was carried out of the stadium on a stretcher and taken to hospital. The game was interrupted for several minutes while the official was treated. He is in a stable condition and will be examined further, a Saints spokesman said. They hope to have more information on Piazza's condition this Monday.

The Lions went on to beat the Saints 33-28, improving their record to ten wins from 13 games this season, while New Orleans dropped to 5-7. Kamara himself had a good day, rushing for 109 yards and two touchdowns on 20 touches. German-American wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown caught his sixth touchdown of the season in the win. Never before has a Lions pass receiver in his first three seasons caught more than the 3091 yards St. Brown has caught since coming to Detroit as a fourth-round pick in 2021.
