Avalanche causes major damage to ski jump in Bischofshofen

An incident causes problems at the fourth competition venue of the Four Hills Tournament. Nets tear under the weight of wet snow, an avalanche breaks loose and causes damage to the outrun. However, ski jumping is not said to be at risk. Help comes from Germany.

Around a week and a half before the start of the Four Hills Tournament, the consequences of a snow avalanche are causing problems for the organizers in Bischofshofen. Because nets were torn, an avalanche slid into the outrun. The landing slope and the outrun of the Paul Ausserleitner ski jump were damaged and now have to be repaired. The tour finale is due to take place there on January 6.

"This has never happened to us before. We had a lot of snow, then it rained heavily. The load on the nets must have been too great," Manfred Schützenhofer, President of the Bischofshofen Ski Club, was quoted as saying by the "Kronen Zeitung" newspaper. Schützenhofer said of the financial damage: "It's too early to say. It will be a six-figure sum." Polish winter sports journalist Jakub Balcerski shared photos of the knocked-out ski jump in Bischofshofen on "X" (formerly Twitter).

In his opinion, however, the jumping is not at risk. "We've been clearing the areas with the excavator since Monday morning and pulling the nets back up. In addition, a truck has already driven to Klingenthal in Vogtland, Saxony, today. They are lending us three large snow nets. We'll be jumping as normal on January 6th. We'll get that there," he told ORF. The excavators had to help out because the pile of snow that had piled up at the bottom of the landing slope was as hard as concrete, according to the "Kronen" report.

After his outstanding start to the season, Austria's Stefan Kraft is considered the top favorite for the tour. However, the German eagles around the strengthened senior Pius Paschke as well as Andreas Wellinger and Karl Geiger are also considered promising candidates for a triumph at the legendary ski jump spectacle.

Amidst the preparations for the Four Hills Tournament, another setback struck the organizers in Bischofshofen. A week and a half before the competition's finale on January 6, an avalanche damages the landing slope and outrun of the Paul Ausserleitner ski jump, following the tearing of nets due to heavy snow and rain.

Despite these challenges, organizers are confident that the ski jumping event will proceed as planned, thanks to repairs, loaned snow nets, and the help of excavators. The tournament's last leg, which is scheduled at the Bischofshofen venue, is expected to proceed undeterred.
