Austrians sing: "Germany to the Germans, foreigners out"

Before the EURO 2020 round of 16 match between Austria and Turkey, an incident occurred. Fans sang racist chants. The peaceful song "L'amour toujours" is usually played among the Austrian national team.

Austrian football fans caused a scandal before the EURO 2020 round of 16 match against Turkey in Leipzig. During a broadcast of Swiss television SRF before the game, it was visible that Austrian supporters in the city sang the slogan "Germans for Germans, foreigners out" to the melody of the song "L'amour toujours" by Gigi D'Agostino. The Leipzig police confirmed on Tuesday evening that they had taken initial suspicions seriously and were investigating the matter further.

The racist slogan became known nationwide through a video from the island of Sylt. In it, numerous young people cheered "foreigners out" and "Germans for Germans" to the song by Gigi D'Agostino during a party. Meanwhile, numerous other cases have come to light. The song is therefore not being played at some folk festivals, and it is not allowed at the EURO 2020 football championship.

The peaceful song "L'amour toujours" is usually played among the Austrian national team. The association had also filed an application for the song to be played in the stadiums in Germany after victories in EURO 2020 matches - due to the incidents with the racist chants, the Austrian Football Association (OFB) and the European Football Union (UEFA) have distanced themselves from this. The Italian DJ D'Agostino had made it clear that the song was only about love.

The racist chants from Austrian fans during the EURO 2020 match against Turkey drew criticism from both the Austrian Football Association (OFB) and UEFA. The chant, a distortion of the peaceful song "L'amour toujours" by Gigi D'Agostino, was also heard at a party in Sylt, Germany, leading to further investigations. Germany's television broadcaster SRF captured the Austrian supporters singing "Germans for Germans, foreigners out" before the European Championship match.
