Australia confirms Ker's absence at Paris Olympics.
Amy Sayer and Sam Kerr, both Chelsea strikers, are ruled out of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games due to long-term ACL injuries they sustained in January while training in Morocco.
Football Australia (FA) confirmed this news on Tuesday as they announced their squad for the two-match home series against China, set to begin in Adelaide on May 31.
"Striker Amy Sayer and forward Sam Kerr will continue their rehabilitation in their club environments and, as a result, will not be available for selection for Paris," FA stated.
Despite Kerr and Sayer's unavailability, Australia's coach Tony Gustavsson is confident in his team, which includes 23 players. He mentioned that the chosen squad is a strong indication of his final Olympic lineup, but players with long-term injuries like midfielders Katrina Gorry and Aivi Luik might also be considered.
"The 23-person squad released today is quite strong and provides a guide to what my final Olympic team could look like," Gustavsson said.
"Players like Katrina Gorry and Aivi Luik, who are currently out with injuries, are also likely to be physically available for the Olympic roster in the near future."
Australia is aiming to win their first Olympic medal in football. The team previously made it to the Women's World Cup semi-finals last year, held on home soil.
