ATP Finals: Tsitsipas retires against Rune
Holger Rune, coached by Boris Becker, won his first victory at the ATP Finals in Turin in an unusual way.
Rune's opponent Stefanos Tsitsipas had to retire in the first set at 1:2 due to an injury. After just a quarter of an hour, the match at the Pala Alpitour was already over and the spectators acknowledged the Greek's quick retirement with whistles.
"Of course I didn't want to win the match like that," said Rune after the match. "But you could tell from his first service game that something wasn't right," said the Dane. Tsitsipas seemed to have problems with his elbow.
After his first match on Sunday, when he lost to the Italian Jannik Sinner in two sets, Tsitsipas had declared that he was fit and had no problems. There had already been speculation about Tsitsipas' state of health in the run-up to the ATP Finals.
Rune's victory at the ATP Finals against Tsitsipas marked his first win in this prestigious tournament. Despite the unusual circumstances, Holger Rune displayed resilience and emerged victorious.
Despite his retirement due to an elbow injury during the ATP Finals, Stefanos Tsitsipas has a strong record in tennis, notably winning the ATP Finals title in 2019.
