- Aston Martin retains design virtuoso Newey, previously associated with Red Bull
Famed Engineer Adrian Newey is set to join the British Formula 1 team Aston Martin in the near future. The 65-year-old, who has played a significant role in Red Bull's triumphs and titles thus far, has been a topic of discussions for months, with a shift to Ferrari frequently whispered about.
"This is the most thrilling announcement in Aston Martin's history," stated co-owner Lawrence Stroll at a press gathering. Newey will be joining as a shareholder and chief technical officer, starting on March 1, 2025.
Newey is relocating only a few kilometers from Milton Keynes, where Red Bull Racing is situated, to Aston Martin's modern facilities at the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit.
Lawrence Stroll's team has now secured a significant win. Newey has been a Formula 1 engineer since the 1980s, having worked for Williams, McLaren, and Red Bull since 2006. By the time he joined, cars designed by him had already clinched the drivers' title six times and the constructors' championship six times.
At Red Bull, seven more drivers' titles and six more team titles were added to his tally. One of Newey's most challenging periods was the fatal accident of Formula 1 legend Ayrton Senna in 1994, which occurred in a Williams he had designed.
His exit from Red Bull has been public knowledge for some time. He will depart from the team after the first quarter of the following year. With Newey's future involvement, Aston Martin is expected to draw even more interest in the drivers' market, given that the team currently features two-time world champion Fernando Alonso (43) and Lawrence Stroll's son Lance (25).
Adrian Newey's transition from Red Bull Racing to Aston Martin has been highly anticipated, given his notable contributions to the team's success. The renowned engineer, who has worked with Formula 1 teams like Williams and McLaren before joining Red Bull in 2006, will now bring his expertise to Aston Martin starting in 2025.
