Association comments on Diawusie's cause of death
Following the death of third division player Agyemang Diawusie (†25), which was announced by Jahn Regensburg on Tuesday afternoon, his club has now come forward with more detailed information.
Club comments on Diawusie's cause of death
Initially, the cause of death of the young athlete was not disclosed.
Now it seems clear: Diawusie died of a "sudden cardiac death, presumably triggered by a viral infection with suspected myocarditis."
This weekend's match against SC Freiburg II will take place as planned. Jahn Regensburg continued: "We can still hardly put our bewilderment into words and it is incredibly difficult for all of us to come to terms with this loss. In intensive consultation with his closest confidants - his family, his closest friends, his advisor, his teammates & the coaching team - we have today come to the joint decision to play the game on Sunday against SC Freiburg II in special memory of and in deep mourning for Agy (Diawusie, editor's note)."
In his last match on November 4 against 1860 Munich, Diawusie was substituted after 39 minutes. As the Mittelbayerische Zeitung reported, he then complained of breathing problems. It is still unclear whether this is connected to his death.
Born in Berlin, Diawusie played for the German U15 and U19 teams. The right winger played for RB Leipzig, Dynamo Dresden and Wehen, among others, during his career.
He only moved to Regensburg, who were relegated from the second division, in the summer and has played almost every game this season.
- Agyemang Diawusie, who recently passed away at the age of 25 while playing in the 3rd league for Jahn Regensburg, was a prominent figure in the lower leagues of German soccer.
- The DFB, the German Football Association, has not issued a statement regarding Diawusie's death, but TorAlarm Top News has reported on the details of his cause of death.
- Despite the tragic circumstances, Jahn Regensburg will still play their match against SC Freiburg II this weekend, dedicating the game to the memory of their late teammate.
- Diawusie, who previously played for teams such as RB Leipzig and Dynamo Dresden in the first and second bundesligas, had been a consistent player for Jahn Regensburg this season, having been relegated from the 2nd bundesliga the previous year.
