"Grey's Anatomy" - Arizona is back, Teddy is fighting for her life

At the end of May, the last episode of the 20th season of the successful hospital series "Grey's Anatomy" aired in the USA, showing screens. About a month later, fans in Germany finally found out how it continued after the dramatic cliffhanger of Season 19. One week before the free-TV start, Disney+ will air the new episodes starting from July 1.

Cliffhanger of the 19th season - how the series left the fans hanging

At the end of the 19th season, fans could rejoice in three special happy endings. Simone Griffith (Alexis Floyd, 30) ruined her wedding and ran into the arms of Lucas Adams (Niko Terho, 28) instead. Atticus "Link" Lincoln (Chris Carmack, 43) and Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington, 40) finally confessed their love, and there seems to be a chance for Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman, 48) and Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo, 54), despite Meredith's move to Boston.

Maggie (Kelly McCreary, 42), who left Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital for her dream job in Chicago, and her still-husband Winston Ndugu (Anthony Hill, 36), are nominated together for the Catherine-Fox Award. They land on the bed together at the award ceremony, but their marriage remains only on paper. Winston is appointed as the new head of Cardio at Grey Sloan in Seattle, and Maggie stays in Chicago. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson, 54), who was not nominated for the award, ultimately takes it for her fight for reproductive rights.

The finale of the previous season was especially dramatic. Teddy Altman (Kim Raver, 55) collapses in the operating room while trying to save the patient Sam Sutton (Samuel Page, 47). Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd, 50) rushes into the operating room and sees his wife lying motionless on the floor. Is his great love still salvageable? "She's in a critical condition," Winston Ndugu summarizes in the trailer for the new season. The doctors fight for their lives in the new episodes.

Arizona Robbins' comeback

However, there is good news for the fans: One of the beloved "Grey's Anatomy" protagonists, Jessica Capshaw (47), is making a comeback and slipping back into the role of Arizona Robbins. There is also a return for Alex Landi (31), who is back as Nico Kim at Grey Sloan.

Despite her departure in the 19th season, Ellen Pompeo remains as Meredith Grey, the heart of the series. She is set to appear in at least four episodes of the new season. Not only because of Nick, who has taken over the training program for the newcomers at Grey Sloan. The actress also serves as the Voiceover voice at the beginning of each episode and remains an executive producer.

Natalie Morales (39) is also new to the cast. She plays the pediatric surgeon Dr. Monica Beltran, who quickly catches Amelia Shepherd's (Caterina Scorsone, 45) attention. She was last seen being held captive by Kai Bartley (E.M. Fightmaster) in the previous season.

The writers' strike caused a shortened season

Due to the writers' strike that paralyzed Hollywood for several months in 2023, the 20th season consists of only ten episodes. But there is already a backup plan, and the 21st season has been confirmed. "The love and loyalty of 'Grey's Anatomy' fans have driven us to a historic 21st season, and I couldn't be more grateful," series creator and producer Shonda Rhimes (54) announced at the beginning of April.

The popular medical series "Grey's Anatomy" has been on TV screens since 2005 and is thus the longest-running hospital series of all time.
