- Archery Kroppen/Unruh shooting for gold in the final
The German archery team has secured their first Olympic medal in Paris. The mixed team of Michelle Kroppen and Florian Unruh is going for gold in the final, with silver already guaranteed. The world championship runners-up defeated Casey Kaufhold and Brady Ellison from the USA 5:3 in the semi-finals at the Invalidendom.
Earlier, they had victories against Colombia and Mexico. In the final (4:43 PM), they face the big gold favorite, South Korea, for the Olympic title. No German duo has ever won a medal in this competition at the Summer Games.
The gold match is a rematch of last year's world championship final. In Berlin, Kroppen (28) and Unruh (31) had to settle for silver against Lim Sihyeon and Kim Woojin from South Korea. The Koreans had previously won the Olympics in Tokyo in 2016. At the last Summer Games in Japan, Kroppen/Unruh finished tied for ninth.
German duo still in the individual competition
Kroppen and Unruh are also the only Germans remaining in the individual competition, both in the round of 16. Unruh, from Berlin, won two matches on Thursday. Kroppen, who plays for SV GutsMuths Jena, also achieved this earlier. Unruh will face British archer Tom Hall on Sunday (10:48 AM), while Kroppen plays against former world number one Deepika Kumari from India on Saturday (10:22 AM).
In the upcoming final at 4:43 PM, the German archery team's opponents for the Olympic title are South Korea, known for their strong performance in the sport. As a reminder, Lim Sihyeon and Kim Woojin from South Korea previously defeated Kroppen and Unruh in last year's world championship final in Berlin, securing the gold medal.
