Altmaier overcomes injury shock at Wimbledon
In the first sentence, Daniel Altmaier slips and falls on the Wimbledon grass, lying there until help arrives. However, the German tennis player still advances to the second round of the Grand Slam classic. Following him is Jan-Lennard Struff, who surprised with new hairdo.
Despite a scare, Daniel Altmaier followed his tennis colleague Jan-Lennard Struff into the second round at Wimbledon. In a five-set match, Altmaier defeated British outsider Arthur Fery 4:6, 7:6 (8:6), 1:6, 6:3, 6:1. Altmaier managed to take advantage of the favorable draw for his first-ever second-round entry in Wimbledon. Fery ranks 247th in the world and entered the main draw through a wildcard. Altmaier's next opponent is Canadian Denis Shapovalov.
In the first set, Altmaier slipped and fell while trailing 3:4 and remained on the grass until medical assistance arrived. After a treatment break, the world number 80 continued playing. Altmaier was also treated at the beginning of the fourth set.
Before Altmaier, Struff had successfully started the third Grand Slam tournament of the season with freshly bleached hair. The Saxon defeated Hungarian Fabian Marozsan 6:4, 6:7 (4:7), 6:2, 6:3. The world number 43 now faces the Chinese Zhang Zhizhen. "I'm very happy with how I played and that I won," Struff said. "It's wonderful to be here. You still appreciate it after several years because it's so beautiful here." His girlfriend took care of his new look. "Luckily, it worked out," he smiled. However, the tournament ended for Maximilian Marterer after a 3:6, 1:6, 4:6 loss against Roberto Bautista Agut from Spain.
The tournament also ended for qualifier Eva Lys, who missed making it to the second round on her Wimbledon debut. The 22-year-old from Hamburg lost to the Frenchwoman Clara Burel 2:6, 4:6 and left after just 61 minutes. Lys, ranked 129th in the world, participated in her first grass-court major in London. Tamara Korpatsch also had to abandon her hopes after a 2:6, 1:6 loss to the British Yuriko Lily Miyazaki.
Meanwhile, Alexander Zverev and Angelique Kerber are eagerly anticipating their Wimbledon starts with different signs. Kerber relies on regaining that special feeling that carried her to the title in 2018. Zverev aims to develop that feeling for the grass court, which he has not particularly enjoyed, and sees himself as unlikely to win against Spanish Roberto Carballes Baena in the first round.
After his slip and fall during the first set, Altmaier managed to recover and secure a spot in the second round of the Wimbledon Grand Slam tournaments, marking his first-ever second-round entry in this classic tennis event. Prior to Altmaier, Struff stood out with his new hairdo and advanced to the second round in the Wimbledon Grand Slam tournaments, beating Marozsan in a thrilling match.
