Altmaier Eliminated at French Open by Tsitsipas's Strong Performance

Daniel Altmaier aspirations for a second-round victory like in the previous year, yet experiences an early setback. He gains ground but fails to advance to the third round. Multiple fixtures are abandoned due to heavy showers.

Previously, Daniel Altmaier was shielded from rainfalls on Court Suzanne Lenglen. However, he wasn't safe from his opponent's aggressive plays by Stefanos Tsitsipas. As Altmaier mentioned, "It was quite a storm." The German tennis player encountered a significant contrast in skill levels during his second-round face-off against the ninth-ranked Greek.

Altmaier reclaimed his momentum and disturbed the favorite a bit, but he ultimately fell short in the 2023 French Open held on clay. In a 3-6, 2-6, 7-6 (7-2), 4-6 match, his journey ended after 2 hours and 43 minutes. Post-game, Altmaier remarked, "I have no regrets about this."

Last year, Altmaier revolutionized Court Suzanne Lenglen by stunning Italian tennis athlete Jannik Sinner. This event was apparently not going to be a re-run. It seemed like a learning experience initially against the Greek. Post a three-day gap since engaging in a five-hour bout against Serbian Laslo Djere, Altmaier bounced back with subpar execution to challenge Tsitsipas. Tsitsipas, a French Open finalist in 2021, exhibited precise strokes and a slick sense of humor.

Altmaier revitalized his style in the third set

According to an unspecified interval, Altmaier returned to the court with a fresh approach, applying immense pressure and risk in his game. This change rewarded him with a tiebreak victory. Aligned alongside his opponent, Tsitsipas, both performers fought fiercely throughout the fourth set. Tsitsipas is currently in a relationship with Spanish tennis star Paula Badosa.

Unfortunately, the storm caused disruption to the tournament administration. Since the enclosed courts at Roland Garros Stade were interrupted, evening matches vanished. This affected second-round matches for Germans Maximilian Marterer against Belgian Zizou Bergs and Henri Squire against Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Carlos Alcaraz, acknowledged as the most significant tournament contender, made it to the third round with immense effort. The 21-year-old vanquished Dutch qualifier Jesper de Jong 6-3, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.

Zverev competes on Thursday against Goffin

Olympic champion Alexander Zverev is slated for another match on Thursday. Even after his intense showdown with Spanish champion Rafael Nadal, he embarks on a less glamorous, but equally challenging game. His next rival, David Goffin, has "caused me some difficulties throughout the years," as Zverev expressed. He described the Belgian as "another exceptional player. Clearly distinctive from Rafael," said the world number four, self-acknowledging the need to begin anew. The confrontation against Nadal was "akin to a tournament final." Zverev added, "Now, I feel like it's a new tournament for me."

In addition to Zverev, Jan-Lennard Struff holds potential for making it past the second week. Showcasing restraint in his error-free triumph on Tuesday against Argentine qualifier Román Andrés Burruchaga, the Warsteiner stated, "I know I'm a danger to certain players with my game." The 19th-ranked Kazakh Alexander Bublik is a "unique player" who has "demonstrated amazing improvement" of late.
