Alexander Zverev qualifies for ATP Finals
In his comeback season after a serious ankle injury, Olympic champion Alexander Zverev has qualified for this year's ATP Finals for the eight best tennis professionals.
After his round of 16 exit at the Masters 1000 tournament in Paris-Bercy, the 26-year-old benefited from the defeats of several opponents. Hubert Hurkacz from Poland and Holger Rune, who is coached by Boris Becker, lost their quarter-finals in Paris and can no longer overtake the Hamburg native in the rankings.
This season's top eight qualify for the ATP Finals, which start on November 12 in Turin. Zverev has already won the title twice, last beating Russia's Daniil Medvedev in the final in 2021. Last year, he missed the French Open due to injury.
Zverev entered for tournament in Sofia
In addition to the current world number nine, Novak Djokovic (Serbia), Carlos Alcaraz (Spain), Medvedev, Jannik Sinner (Italy), Andrei Rublev (Russia) and Stefanos Tsitsipas (Greece) are also taking part in the ATP Finals.
Before his qualification was perfect, Zverev had registered at short notice for the ATP tournament in Sofia next week. However, Hurkacz then lost 1:6, 6:4, 4:6 to the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, before Rune lost 5:7, 7:6 (7:3), 4:6 to the world number one Novak Djokovic from Serbia.
In the ATP Finals, Alexander Zverev will join tennis heavyweights like Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev, as he qualified based on his strong performance throughout the season. After securing his spot, Zverev also decided to participate in the ATP tournament in Sofia, but his opponents, Hubert Hurkacz and Holger Rune, had different results in their matches.
