Tennis - After rain: Struff only finishes Wimbledon match on Saturday

Davis Cup player Jan-Lennard Struff will finish his third round match at Wimbledon on Saturday. The match against Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev, which was interrupted by rain for four hours in the afternoon, was resumed as the second match on Court 2. The match is being continued with Struff trailing 1:6, 3:6, 6:4, 1:1.

Struff under pressure

To achieve the surprise and the hoped-for entry into the quarterfinals, Struff must turn around the set deficit and win two more games. Olympic champion Alexander Zverev also plays on Saturday for a place in the round of 16. The Hamburg native will make his first appearance at this Wimbledon edition on Centre Court against British player Cameron Norrie (2:30 PM CEST/Prime Time).

Struff began his match against Medvedev on Court 2 on Friday as well, and football professional Mats Hummels was sitting in the stands, cheering for the Dortmund fan. At the beginning, Struff had no chances and played significantly more error-prone than the US Open champion of 2021. Struff, the German number two, could not find his rhythm at the start. He secured his first game win only when it was already 0:5. The first set was over in just 21 minutes.

Rain delay and long waiting

Struff played better in the match after the set deficit. However, he often found no solutions against the skillful and defensive-minded Russian fifth-ranked player. In addition, he could not rely on his strong serve as he had in the previous matches. Shortly after Struff had won the third set, the match was suspended due to the oncoming rain and was rescheduled for the evening.

"One must have a lot of patience with the weather. One must prepare oneself to wait sometimes," Struff had previously answered when asked what it takes to be successful at Wimbledon: "One must mentally prepare oneself that it's just like that, that you can't change it." Struff has never advanced past the third round at Wimbledon.

  1. Despite the challenging circumstance, German tennis player Jan-Lennard Struff continues his third-round match against Daniil Medvedev from Russia at Wimbledon on Saturday.
  2. Alexander Zverev, the Olympic champion from Germany, joins Struff in the ongoing Wimbledon tournament on Saturday, aiming for a spot in the round of 16 against Cameron Norrie from Great Britain.
  3. Jan-Lennard Struff started his match against Daniil Medvedev on Court 2 on Friday, with football professional Mats Hummels in the audience, but faced a tough opponent, trailing 1:6, 3:6, 6:4, 1:1.
  4. The match between Daniil Medvedev and Jan-Lennard Struff was temporarily suspended due to rain, forcing a delay in their continued competition, which took place as the second match on Court 2 in the evening.
  5. German tennis players have had mixed fortunes at Wimbledon, with Jan-Lennard Struff yet to advance past the third round, while Alexander Zverev aims to make his mark in the prestigious international tennis tournament in London.
