After kidnapping parents: Díaz saves Liverpool point
Just over a week after his parents were kidnapped, Luis Díaz has saved Liverpool FC from their second defeat of the season in the English Premier League. The Colombian international scored in stoppage time to make it 1:1 (0:0) at promoted Luton Town.
Díaz's parents were kidnapped in his home country last Saturday. The mother was rescued. Díaz pulled up his shirt after scoring and displayed the words "Freedom for Dad" on his T-shirt.
Liverpool got off to a dominant start at the club north of London. There were only a few chances for coach Jürgen Klopp's team through Darwin Núñez (13th minute) and Diogo Jota (33rd). After the break, Luton Town had a great chance to take the lead. Chiedozie Ogbene failed to beat Liverpool goalkeeper Allison Becker (65'). At the other end, Núñez shot over the goal from the best position (70').
Klopp annoyed with referee
The video assistant was then called into action several times. A possible foul penalty after a tackle between Teden Mengi and Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk was checked but not given. Klopp was annoyed and was cautioned by referee Andy Madley. A short time later, the Liverpool professionals claimed another penalty. Luton counter-attacked on the counter-attack: Ex-Bremer Tahith Chong scored to make it 0:1. After minutes of review, the goal counted (80'). Liverpool's Díaz was substituted shortly before the end and equalized with a header (90.+5).
Díaz was back in the Liverpool squad for the first time since his parents were kidnapped. "It's still pretty emotional," explained Klopp before kick-off. The release of his father is apparently imminent. "All the signs he's getting, as far as I know, are very positive," said the coach.
- Despite the distraught situation with his parents, Luis Díaz managed to make an impact in the Premier League, scoring a crucial equalizer for Liverpool FC against Luton Town in the 90th minute plus five, saving them from a potential defeat.
- In the same Premier League match, Liverpool faced controversy as a potential foul penalty was not given against Teden Mengi and Virgil van Dijk, prompting Jürgen Klopp to express his frustration, resulting in a caution from referee Andy Madley.
- Following his parents' kidnapping, Luis Díaz returned to Liverpool FC's squad and showcased his determination, displaying the words "Freedom for Dad" after scoring his equalizing goal, providing a much-needed boost for the team.
