Adidas and DFB set a new record with their pink jersey design.
Deruded by numerous critics, adored by an overwhelming amount: The vibrant pink uniform of the German football national team sparks controversy, resulting in record-breaking sales for the DFB and Adidas. To date, no away kit has been as popular.
The vibrant pink uniform of the National team has become a historical bestseller for the German Football Federation (DFB) and Adidas. "The pink kit is the best-selling away kit in the history of all DFB kits," said Adidas representative Oliver Bruggen. The DFB team will take the field in Stuttgart against Hungary in their second group match at the Home-EM for the first time at a final tournament in pink on this Wednesday (18:00/ARD, MagentaTV and in the ntv.de-Live ticker).
The variant featuring the number 8 of Champions League winner Toni Kroos is particularly sought after, Bruggen stated. DFB President Bernd Neuendorf commented on the strong interest in the pink-lavender uniform: "I think people like it because it's trendy."
Many perceived the uniform as a potential symbol for more inclusivity. Neuendorf commented on the color choice: "I don't think people should interpret the color choice in any way. I just think that people find it trendy to wear the jersey - and that's acceptable."
Adidas refrains from disclosing production numbers. Bruggen said: "We are pleased with the growing enthusiasm for EURO 2024 and the continued high demand for DFB jerseys. As for production numbers, we unfortunately remain tight-lipped." Both uniforms are obtainable through Adidas distribution channels and retail partners. "We are in talks with the specialist trade regarding further jersey quantities," Bruggen added.
The debut in pink was celebrated by the DFB team in the past March - Germany won with 2:1 against the Netherlands in a warm-up match. The away uniform is also popular among celebrities and politicians. For instance, Federal Minister for Economics and Climate Protection Robert Habeck published a video prior to the match against Scotland, wearing the pink uniform.
