British rider Georgie Campbell passed away at the Bicton International Horse Trials in Devon on May 26, 2024, after a tragic fall during the eventing competition. She was 36 years old.
The British Eventing organization confirmed the news on Sunday. The accident occurred at the International Horse Trials, where Campbell was a participant. According to a statement, she fell on fence 5b and was examined by medical professionals but couldn't be saved.
Campbell's horse, Global Quest, was examined by the on-site vets and was found to be unharmed. The event including the cross-country phase, which was still due for Sunday, was cancelled. The organizers expressed their sympathies, saying:
"We're deeply saddened to announce that Georgie Campbell passed away on Sunday, May 26, 2024, at the Bicton International Horse Trials in Devon, England. Our thoughts are with Georgie's family during this difficult time. We would like to remind you that, to respect the family's privacy, we won't be providing any further details."
Georgie Campbell: An accomplished rider
Known for her skills, Campbell transitioned from show jumping to eventing. In this equestrian sport, riders participate in three disciplines: jumping, dressage, and cross-country. Campbell proudly represented Great Britain in numerous prestigious competitions and was part of the Nations Cup. Overall, she won six competitions during her career.
In 2020, Georgie Campbell married fellow eventing rider Jesse Campbell, who had represented New Zealand in the Tokyo Olympics. The couple, Campbells Eventing, became a formidable team in the world of horse riding. With her horse Global Quest, she had been a team for five years.
