World Cup in Hochfilzen - 34th place in the sprint: biathlete Nawrath loses overall lead

Biathlete Philipp Nawrath was unable to defend his yellow jersey as overall World Cup leader. The 30-year-old Bavarian had to settle for 34th place after three penalties in the sprint race in Hochfilzen, Austria, where the Norwegian Tarjei Bö shot flawlessly.

Nawrath had to relinquish the overall lead to the Swede Sebastian Samuelsson, who sprinted to third place with one penalty. Norway's Sturla Holm Laegreid finished second (0 faults).

"It's a shame to have to give up the jersey. But you still have the chance to attack and show good races again," said Nawrath. He already has the opportunity to strike back in the pursuit on Saturday.

Benedikt Doll narrowly missed the podium after a mistake in the standing start. He finished seventh. Johannes Kühn rounded off the decent team result in ninth place. Team colleague Justus Strelow was the only German to remain penalty-free, but was significantly slower than the fastest competitors on the cross-country course. The Saxon finished the 10-kilometre race in 15th place. After his illness, Roman Rees (2) came back with 31st place and David Zobel (2) finished 26th.
