26-year-old national goalkeeper passes away shortly after a foreign game.

Following the conclusion of FC Millwall's club season, Montenegro national team goalkeeper Matija Šarkić was still active. Unfortunately, at the tender age of 26, Šarkić experienced an unexpected demise. As per reports, Šarkić sought medical aid early in the morning.

The English Second Division team, FC Millwall, confirmed the devastating news about Šarkić, with no comments regarding the reason for his passing. The statement stated, "We are profoundly shocked." Šarkić played for over 90 minutes for the Montenegrin national team in their unsuccessful test match against the Belgian hosts on June 5th, ending in a score of 0:2. Four days later, he was not included in the squad for the home game against Georgia (1:3).

According to the Montenegrin public broadcasting service RTCG, Šarkić awoke feeling unwell roughly at 6:00 am on a Saturday morning. Friends had requested an ambulance, but by 6:30, Šarkić had already passed away. The previous evening, he had socialized with friends and enjoyed a meal at a restaurant. British newspapers The Daily Mirror and The Sun, without revealing their sources, claimed that Šarkić died after a brief, severe sickness.

Šarkić made his national team debut in November 2019 and had played in nine games since then. In 2015, he moved from RSC Anderlecht to England as a teenager. After several loan spells, Millwall permanently signed Šarkić in August 2023 and he had been their primary goalkeeper since December. During the previous season, he had appeared in 32 matches.

"All at the club extend their sympathies and condolences to Matija's family and friends during this incredibly tough time," the Millwall statement continued. "The club will not provide additional comments at this time and requests that the privacy of Matija's family be respected," the "Lions" added. The Montenegrin Football Federation described Šarkić as a cherished player and a close friend who was an integral part of the national team.
