The cause of his death hasn't been revealed yet. CNN has reached out to representatives of Ross and 2 Live Crew for a statement.

Luther Campbell, who known as Uncle Luke and a former member of 2 Live Crew, expressed his condolences in a post on social media.

"My heartfelt condolence goes out to the family of my brother Marquis and his fans all over the world after learning of his passing. We stood up for our culture and created amazing music together, something I'll never forget," Campbell wrote, partly. "My brother Marquis would want us to celebrate his life, and that's exactly what I'm going to do. Rest In Peace my brother."

Though not an original member, Ross was a prominent one.

Born in Rochester, New York, he grew up in Los Angeles before moving to Miami.

He became part of 2 Live Crew in 1986, joining the crew consisting of DJ Mr. Mixx (David Hobbs), Fresh Kid Ice (Christopher Wong Won) and Campbell, performing with the name Luke Skyywalker.

Their songs, lyrics, and performances were known for their sexually explicit nature, including their 1989 hit "Me So Horny."

This song was included in their 1989 album "As Nasty As They Wanna Be," which was deemed obscene by a Florida judge and was one of the first to carry a "Parental Advisory: Explicit Content" label.

The group disbanded in the 1990s, but Ross later reunited with Hobbs and Won during the 2000s, touring together until Won passed away in 2017.
