1:8 defeat for DEB women at Germany Cup against Finland
The ice hockey women have clearly lost their second game at the Germany Cup. The DEB team suffered an 8:1 (0:2, 0:4, 1:2) debacle against co-favorites Finland in Landshut.
The German Ice Hockey Federation's announced bid to host the 2027 Women's World Championship did not provide a tailwind for national coach Jeff MacLeod's team. Germany had won the opening game against Denmark two days earlier 1:0.
To conclude the tournament, which has been combined with the men's tournament for the first time, Germany will face the Czech Republic, who finished third at the World Cup, on Saturday (2.30 pm/Magentasport). If the Czech women manage a victory against the team led by captain Daria Gleissner, they will have won the first women's edition of the Deutschland Cup. The hosts are in third place ahead of the scoreless and winless Danes.
Finns score several times despite being outnumbered
For ten minutes, the German players and a strong goalkeeper Chiara Schultes were able to prevent the superior 2021 World Cup bronze medallists from taking the lead in front of 1667 spectators. Then Sanni Vanhanen (10th minute) and Noora Tulus (14th) ensured a quick 0:2.
Finland won 3:0 at the 2023 World Cup in Brampton, Canada, but in Landshut they had a much greater desire to score goals. In the second half, the Northern Europeans scored three times despite being outnumbered. Viivi Vainikka (23rd), Pauliina Salonen (25th) and Julia Liikala (29th) increased the score to 0:5 with one player less on the ice.
After goals number six and seven, the MacLeod team at least managed to interrupt the Finns' scoring run for the time being. Theresa Wagner scored to make it 1:7 (50'). 20 seconds later, Kiira Yrjänen made it 1:8.
Despite the German Ice Hockey Federation's bid for the 2027 Women's World Championship, national coach Jeff MacLeod's team struggled in the Germany Cup, especially in their match against Finland. Despite being outnumbered in the second half, Finland's women's ice hockey team, led by coach Jeff MacLeod, saw Jeff MacLeod's team suffer a 1:8 defeat in the Germany Cup, with notable performances from Finnish players like Sanni Vanhanen, Noora Tulus, Viivi Vainikka, Pauliina Salonen, and Julia Liikala.
