Young woman dies at Taylor Swift concert
A 23-year-old woman attends a concert by pop star Taylor Swift in Rio. She suffers a cardiac arrest in the stadium. Now the organizers are being criticized: despite tropical temperatures, fans were not allowed to bring water into the stadium. The musician is shocked.
US pop star Taylor Swift has expressed her "shock" following the death of a 23-year-old fan at one of her concerts during a heatwave in Brazil. "Ana Benevides, who attended The Eras tour concert in Rio last night, has passed away," Swift wrote in a post on online networks. "I can't tell you how devastated I am about this," she explained on Instagram.
In a handwritten letter that Swift published in one of her Instagram stories, she wrote: "I can't believe I'm writing these words, but I'm heartbroken to announce that we lost a fan tonight before my show." She had not yet received much information about the case, she only knew that the deceased was "incredibly young".
The health authorities in Rio de Janeiro explained that Benevides died on Friday during Swift's concert at the Nilton Santos stadium. The 23-year-old had said that she felt unwell and then suffered a cardiac arrest. Resuscitation attempts failed, it said. It was too early to determine the exact cause of death, "which will be investigated", the authorities said.
Heat index in Rio was 59 degrees
The venue in Rio de Janeiro had been overheated. As footage circulating on the internet shows, Swift sent helpers to hand out bottles of water to thirsty fans. The organizers are now being heavily criticized because concertgoers were not allowed to take water bottles into the concert hall despite the high temperatures. Large parts of central and south-eastern Brazil are currently suffering from an unusually oppressive heatwave. On the day of the concert, the heat index in Rio, which combines air temperature and humidity, had risen to 59 degrees Celsius.
Brazilian Justice Minister Flavio Dion announced that his ministry would take "necessary measures for access to water" at public events such as concerts and investigate responsibility for "damage already caused". "It is unacceptable that people suffer, faint and even die because they do not have access to water," said Dion - but pointed out that the cause of Benevides' death had not yet been officially determined.
Despite the sweltering heatwave in Brazil, where the heat index reached a staggering 59 degrees Celsius, organizers strictly enforced a ban on bringing water into the concert venue for Taylor Swift's performance. Following the tragic death of a 23-year-old fan named Ana Benevides during the "The Eras tour" concert, entertainment industry criticisms arose, with many echoing Swift's shock and expressing concern over spectator safety.
