Timothée Chalamet - Willy Wonka dispenses with Johnny Depp's advice

By the time the film is released in December at the latest, everyone will be enchanted by him. In "Wonka", Timothée Chalamet (27) is set to impress as the headstrong young chocolatier Willy Wonka. The 27-year-old shooting star has now revealed to "E! News " that he did not ask Johnny Depp (60), who went down in film history in 2005 as Willy Wonka in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", for advice. This is all the more remarkable as Depp almost became Chalamet's father-in-law.

Chalamet was in a relationship with Johnny Depp's daughter

In 2005, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and its leading actor Johnny Depp wowed the crowds in Tim Burton's (65) film adaptation of the famous children's book by Roald Dahl (1916-1990). And: Timothée Chalamet was reportedly in a relationship with Depp's daughter Lily-Rose Depp (24) from 2018 to 2020. So it would make sense for Chalamet to get some advice from his almost-father-in-law Johnny Depp on how he could take on the role of Willy Wonka. However, at the film's premiere in London on Wednesday, Chalamet revealed that he hadn't spoken to Depp about the role: "No - I really love this version of the movie." Chalamet added that he was "ten or eleven years old" when Johnny Depp played Willy Wonka. He found Depp's version "very brave".

Influenced by the 1971 version

However, another version of the film may have had a greater influence on his portrayal of the role: The 1971 musical adaptation starring comedian and actor Gene Wilder (1933-2016): "I practically grew up with that movie through my mom." The children's book, published in 1964, tells the story of little Charlie Bucket, who grows up in poor circumstances. One day, Willy Wonka, the mysterious owner of the chocolate factory, announces that he has hidden golden tickets in five chocolate bars. The finders will have exclusive access to his factory. Charlie finally gains access to Wonka's world of wonders.

Two golden tickets: Wonka role and Jenner dates

Chalamet's casting for the "Wonka" role beat off competition from well-known names. Tom Holland (27) and Ezra Miller (31), among others, are said to have applied for the role. And Chalamet seems to have found another golden ticket: Chalamet has reportedly been dating billionaire and mother-of-two Kylie Jenner (26) since April.
