Why Heinz Hoenig is moving into the jungle camp

He is 72 years old, happily married, the father of two small children and still a sought-after actor with a successful CV. And yet Heinz Hoenig is going into the jungle camp in January. Now he reveals what appeals to him about it.

Heinz Hoenig is one of the country's best-known actors. The 72-year-old has therefore caused a real surprise with his announcement that he is going to the jungle camp. In an interview with RTL, he reveals why he is throwing himself into the fray on "Ich bin ein Star - Holt mich hier raus!" and why this is anything but a step down for him.

Even at over 70, he doesn't feel too old for the challenge in Australia, Hoenig explains. Although he hasn't really followed the previous 16 seasons and has only seen a few minutes, he says: "I was just up for it this year. I just want to experience it. I'm free to do it now."

He is excited to see what he can experience Down Under in January: "I don't know what's coming, who's taking part and what's going on," says Hoenig. But he wants to broaden his horizons in the bush. He is interested in "insights, knowledge - you can't buy them. You have to experience them".

His wife and children accompany him

The fact that he is taking part in the reality show as a renowned actor is not a problem for him: "Jungle camp used to be the end ... That has turned into the opposite." He already has a great career behind him, but there is still a lot ahead of him. For him, the RTL show(also available on RTL+) is an exciting adventure: "Hey, it's a format that I can't ignore. And something might come out of it that I don't even know yet. Which can be nice. And then my wife is involved - what's going to happen?"

His partner Annika, who is 34 years his junior, and his two young sons will eventually travel to Australia with him. "It's good to have them nearby," says Hoenig. But he already knows: "I'm going to miss them." Nevertheless, he wants to show off his strengths around the campfire: "I can love and I can cook well." His cooking skills in particular could be very valuable to the campers.

The main thing is "good people"

When it comes to his fellow contestants, Hoenig wants to rely entirely on the knowledge of human nature that he has acquired during his long career: "I can tell who is afraid. I can tell who is lying and I can also tell who wants to lie." He is "prepared for everything" that awaits him in the camp. Nevertheless, he has one wish: "I want good people." Everyone can show their emotions, show their fears. Only one thing is a no-go for him: "But don't show off!"

Heinz Hoenig began his film and television career in the 1970s. Since then, he has appeared in numerous productions, including "Das Boot" (1981), "Der König von St. Pauli" (1998) and even "Verbotene Liebe" (2020 to 2021). With his first wife, who died in 2012, he had two children who have since grown up. He married his current wife Annika in 2019, and his two sons with her were born in 2020 and 2022.
