Good Hotel London - Where you can sleep in London from 95 pounds - and do good
They dropped out of school, couldn't find a job for a long time or had to take a career break as single mothers: Almost half of the employees, whether chambermaids or waiters, have joined or returned to a regular working life and a community after detours. "Good Crew" is written on the back of their black T-shirts, and it's true.
Even from the outside, the hotel impresses as a huge black, floating shoebox that has been moored for five years on the banks of the Royal Victoria Dock, just 30 minutes by tube from the Tower. The lobby also features black walls, gray screed floors with sisal carpets and lounge chairs by Moooi, the Dutch avant-garde design label.
The 148 rooms are simple, in keeping with the low price: On just 13 square meters, there is a large bed, shower, air conditioning and a kettle, no telephone, no TV, no minibar.
View of the skyline and airplanes
The initiator of the project is Dutch businessman Martin Dresen. He previously successfully operated the project in the three-storey platform in Amsterdam for two years before the contracts for the mooring period expired. So he had his hotel towed across the canal.
In London, it was given a roof terrace with a bar. From here you can look out over the Thames to the skyline and the planes taking off and landing at nearby City Airport. Noise-sensitive people are recommended to visit at the weekend: There is a ban on flying from 1 p.m. on Saturday until midday on Sunday.
In the meantime, many of the former unemployment benefit recipients have made a career start in the building: The three-month training program ends with a "graduation party", where graduates aged between 17 and 55 can be headhunted. One young mother, whose passion is mixing cocktails, had the choice and stayed in her training company, "with my family".
