stern-DISCUTHEK - When should children be allowed to use a smartphone? Mommy blogger vs. psychologist
How many of you really know what children and young people are confronted with in WhatsApp groups, on TikTok or Snapchat? Unfiltered, they see war crimes, cruelty to animals and pornography. As it is almost impossible to control social media content, the dangers are constantly increasing.
In the Diskuthek@Körber-Stiftung we debate: What is the right way to use smartphones and social media? Does consumption need to be regulated by law? And what can parents, educators and politicians do to protect our children?
When should children be given a cell phone? These guests discuss:
- Darleen Besmann is a mom blogger, musician and presenter. As a mother of two children, she recognizes many dangers when it comes to smartphones - including in herself. However, she is also of the opinion that it is often viewed far too negatively and downright demonized.
- Prof. Dr. Christian Montag is Professor of Molecular Psychology at the University of Ulm. In his book "Du gehörst uns!", he analyzes the data business model and the psychological strategies of large internet companies. He warns that permanent digital interruptions prevent children from performing critical life tasks.
