Waterborne parasite leaves English village in a state of anxiety

Inhabitants of an English fishing village in Devon, named Brixham, can't drink their tap water as normal these days. A parasite has found its way into their water supply. The health authorities have confirmed over 40 instances of this illness. Experts believe this number will grow.

Residents of a village in southwest England have had to boil their tap water for several days now because of a parasite infestation. This rule affects approximately 16,000 homes and businesses within the Brixham region of Devon. A tiny parasite, which causes diarrhea, was unearthed in the water there.

At least 46 cases have been confirmed, while over 100 people have reported similar symptoms, as per the UK Health & Safety Executive. The illness brought on by this cryptosporidium parasite can last more than two weeks.

The managing director of the responsible water supply company, South West Water, Susan Devy, expressed apologies for the infestation. The company postulates the issue could've stemmed from a pipe in a grazing area for cattle near a water basin. South West Water has also provided free bottled water at three spots. Additionally, they've raised customer compensation from 15 pounds to 115 pounds (approximately 130 euros).

Professor of Medicine, Paul Hunter, at the University of East Anglia, informed the BBC that more people might fall ill from the parasite infestation in the coming days or weeks. This is due to the lengthy incubation period.

Anthony Mangnall MP, who represents that region in the British Parliament, said residents would likely need to boil water for another seven days. The water company will be held responsible, he added. "They've been tardy in their actions, and their communication with customers has been abysmal," stated Mangnall, a Conservative Party member.
