War against Hamas will last "more than a few months"
There is no real timetable for an end to the war. At least, according to Israeli Defense Minister Gallant, it is difficult to estimate one. There is an important reason for this.
According to the Israeli defense minister, the war between Israel and the radical Islamic Hamas will last "more than a few months". "Hamas is a terrorist organization that has built itself up over a decade to fight Israel," said Defence Minister Joav Gallant at a meeting with the US National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, in Tel Aviv, according to his office.
Hamas, which is classified as a terrorist organization by the USA and the EU, has "built infrastructures above and below ground", which is why it is not easy to destroy them, said Gallant. In the end, however, Israel would win and destroy Hamas.
Sullivan had traveled to Tel Aviv for talks with the Israeli government. The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu published a photo of the two men shaking hands. Talks with members of the Israeli war cabinet are also planned, according to the online service X.
USA wants to persuade Israel to change tactics
In the run-up to his trip, Sullivan had told the Wall Street Journal that he wanted to talk about a timetable for an end to the war and urge the Israeli leadership to "move to a different phase than the kind of high-intensity operations we see today".
The USA is one of Israel's most important allies in the war against Hamas. However, the US government is increasingly criticizing the actions of the Israeli military in the Gaza Strip.
The war between Israel and Hamas was triggered on 7 October by a major attack on Israel by the militant Palestinian organization. Fighters from Hamas, which is classified as a terrorist organization by the USA and the EU, attacked Israel and carried out the worst attack on the country since the founding of the state 75 years ago. Israel responded by bombing targets in the Gaza Strip and launching a ground offensive, announcing the destruction of Hamas.

Despite the USA's push for a change in tactics, Defence Minister Gallant maintains that the Israel war against Hamas, classified as a terrorist organization by both the USA and EU, will last longer than a few months due to Hamas's intricate infrastructure. The conflict began with a significant attack from Hamas on Israel, resulting in intense Israeli retaliation.
