Such a royal relationship as in a fairy tale? Not even Prince William and Princess Kate can look back on such a love story. The prince served his long-term partner quite cruelly in between.

Since over twenty years, precisely since late 2002, Prince William and the commoner Kate Middleton have been a couple. However, it took nearly nine years for the lovebirds to find their way to the altar. Their relationship had to weather several ups and downs. In 2007, there was even a brief separation, reportedly initiated by Prince William.

In the British tabloids, Kate Middleton was long known as "Waity Katie" because the Prince was reluctant to put a ring on her finger. For nine years, until February 2011, she had to wait for her current husband to muster the courage to propose. The wedding followed just a few weeks later, on April 29, 2011.

The biography "Catherine, The Princess of Wales" by Robert Jobson now takes a closer look at the love story of Prince William and Princess Kate. After graduating from university in 2005, Prince William visited Kate at her family's home every Friday during his military training in Sandhurst. One of their first public appearances as a couple was in December 2006. Kate was invited to the graduation ceremony of William's military training, suggesting that their relationship was serious and potentially heading towards an engagement.

But then came the shock. According to Jobson, Prince William abruptly cancelled his New Year's Eve plans in 2007, hinting that "something was not right". His intuition proved correct. Soon after, Prince William called his girlfriend to end the relationship. He explained that they both needed "a little space to find their own way" and that he couldn't promise her an engagement at that time.

The author describes the situation further: "In a emotionally charged 30-minute conversation, both admitted they had different views. It was a devastating blow for Catherine, who felt doubly disappointed because she was dumped over the phone." Not very chivalrous.

While Prince William celebrated the separation with a night out at the London nightclub Mahiki, Kate, who was "determined to hide her pain from the public eye" according to Jobson, sought refuge from the media with her mother Carole Middleton in Dublin. Afterwards, she went on vacation with a friend to Ibiza. Upon her return to London, Kate and her sister Pippa were often photographed leaving clubs - seemingly on purpose, as these pictures were seen by William, who spent most of his time as an army officer in the barracks.

Whether it was a plan to make a public appearance and remind the Prince, or just a fortunate coincidence, Prince William changed his mind, and the couple reunited at a costume party hosted by jockey Sam Waley-Cohen with the theme "Freakin' Naughty". "Kate arrived dressed as a nurse, and William immediately went up to her. Then they spent the first part of the evening in an intense conversation before hitting the dance floor, where they finally kissed."
