Volkswagen introduced the new T7 Transporter, which is closely related to the Ford Transit in terms of technology and optics.

VW T7 - new generation of van rolling ahead

The first Ford Transit was once developed in the 1950s by the father of the first VW Transporter. Now, a new VW Transporter is coming to market, based on Ford technology.

After the Amarok, the Transporter of the T7 series is the second model novelty from VW Commercial Vehicles, stemming from a cooperation with Ford and essentially based on Ford technology. Despite a VW face, the proportions of the Ford Transit are clearly recognizable from various perspectives.

The Transporter is available as a Kombi, panel van, and pickup, as well as a fully glazed, nine-seater bus, in two lengths of 5.05 and 5.45 meters, and with 5.8 or 9.0 cubic meters of loading volume. The payload capacity is up to 1.33 tons, and the towing capacity is up to 2.8 tons.

Available from early 2025

Like the Transit, the T7 family, available from early 2025, offers diesel, plug-in hybrid, and electric powertrains, as well as an optional all-wheel-drive system. The diesel engines range from 81 kW/110 PS to 125 kW/170 PS.

Volkswagen is also presenting the nine-seater Caravelle based on Ford.

The part-time electric eHybrid has a system output of 171 kW/232 PS. Electric powertrains are available with 136 PS, 218 PS, and 286 PS, each combined with a 64 kWh battery. A variant with a smaller battery and less power for pure urban use will follow, as will an electric all-wheel-drive version.

12-inch display and 13-inch infotainment touchscreen

The cockpit features a digital instrument cluster with a 12-inch display and a 13-inch infotainment touchscreen. Some control buttons are integrated into the steering wheel, which also features a shift lever for operating the optional automatic transmission. Standard equipment includes smartphone connectivity, DAB+ radio, and the required assistants.

The short Transporter starts at around 43,800 euros, with the long version costing around 2,000 euros more. The Kombi starts at at least 48,400 euros, and the pickup with a double cab costs around 46,600 euros.

The cabin of the new VW T7 aka Ford Transit incorporates display screens.

Despite sharing some technological aspects with the upcoming VW Transporter, the distinct features of the Ford Transit are still evident, particularly from its recognizable proportions. In the future, Ford is expected to leverage its expertise, as the new Ford Transit is anticipated to be developed, following the success of the Ford Amarok.
