Völler comments on moaning during the European Championship draw

A "silly boy's prank", commented England's head coach on the groaning noises during the European Championship draw in the Elbphilharmonie. Rudi Völler makes no secret of his astonishment at British humor. The alleged perpetrator celebrates.

DFB sports director Rudi Völler has explained the strange disturbing noises during the European Championship draw on Saturday evening with "the notorious English humor". "Yes, it was relatively quiet during the draw. Something was disturbing," said the 63-year-old on Sport1's "Doppelpass". He was told the background. "The English are a bit different to the rest of the world," said Völler.

England head coach Gareth Southgate was irritated by the action. He had also heard the noises, he told the Guardian. "I assume it was some kind of silly boy prank, but it was hard to tell what it was," the paper quoted him as saying.

On Saturday evening, English comedian Daniel Jarvis described himself as the perpetrator of the noise disturbance in Hamburg's Elbphilharmonie concert hall. On Platform X, he documented how he apparently manipulated the sound in the concert hall during the Los show. Jarvis filmed himself watching the draw on TV. "The 2024 European Championship, the draw. And we're going to make fun of them," he says. He then dialed a number on his cell phone, and shortly afterwards the groaning noises could be heard in Hamburg. Jarvis laughed and said: "We've made it!"

Nagelsmann grins sheepishly

Guests in the concert hall and UEFA official Giorgio Marchetti, who was in charge of the draw, initially heard a noise like a baby crying, later it sounded like a woman moaning. Marchetti reacted with irritation during the event. "Here are a few noises ..." he said. German coach Julian Nagelsmann and "lot fairy" Brian Laudrup grinned somewhat sheepishly. UEFA also confirmed these impressions, but was initially unable to provide an explanation. The sounds could also be heard on TV and in the UEFA stream. Numerous internet users made fun of the disruption.

According to participants in the draw, this was reminiscent of an incident during the broadcast of the FA Cup duel between Liverpool FC and Wolverhampton Wanderers on British TV station BBC in January. Ex-professional and presenter Gary Lineker had asked a question to his colleague Alan Shearer when suddenly a woman's moaning could be heard. Jarvis also claims to have been responsible for this.
