The most potent countermeasure for prolonged solitary existence could potentially lie in enhancing your flirtatious skills.

- Various Factors That Lead Some Individuals to Remain Single

Not every individual who's currently Solo is eager to change this situation. However, numerous people are yearning for a companion, but things just don't work out. Why? Greek researchers, Menelaos Apostolou and Elli Michaelidou, tackled this issue. They recognized 17 factors that could either make finding a partner hard or simple.

The high prevalence of involuntary singleness raises concerns about its causes, the researchers mentioned. For their study, they surveyed 1432 individuals, 734 women (average age 35) and 698 men (average age 39). The group consisted of both unmarried people and voluntary or involuntary singles.

The study investigated the influence of 17 different characteristics and personality traits that are crucial for dating success and which are not. They are:

  1. Flexibility
  2. Body Mass Index (BMI)
  3. Ability to recognize flirt attempts
  4. Picky
  5. Conscientiousness
  6. Chatty
  7. Flirtatious
  8. Sexual openness
  9. Emotion regulation
  10. Openness
  11. Self-confidence
  12. Self-perceived partner value
  13. Sexual function
  14. Shyness
  15. Self-perceived attractiveness
  16. Sexual orientation
  17. Children from past relationships

The study explored the possible relationship between these factors and involuntary singleness. This isn't the first study attempting to resolve the mismatch problem - the paradox that societies with almost free partner choice have a high percentage of involuntary singles. Menelaos Apostolou and Elli Michaelidou's approach is innovative since they examine multiple factors and their correlations. The evaluation results reveal that there are decisive factors that increase the likelihood of remaining single and not finding a partner despite wanting one. However, these are different characteristics for men and women.

Women and men remain single for different reasons

The result: No one factor alone leads to involuntary singleness. Only when certain characteristics combine does it become challenging. Poor flirt skills are a negative factor for both men and women. This isn't surprising, as flirting is a fundamental skill, lacking which there are no initial approaches. In women, things become hopeless only when, besides poor flirting, there is also a combination of low flirt skills, sexual modesty, pickiness in partner selection, and low adaptability. Then, a prolonged period of singleness is almost inevitable.

Poor flirt skills are also a negative factor for men. However, they form a different cluster of negative factors than in women. In them, they are: poor emotional control, low self-confidence. Additionally, there is an increased Body Mass Index (BMI) and impaired sexual function.

One result is the same for both sexes: Without good flirt skills, nothing works. However, they are just a starting point, affected individuals should also consider other negative factors and work on them if necessary, if they want to find a partner.
