US retailers post surprisingly slight increase in sales
US retailers surprisingly recorded a slight increase in sales in November. Their sales rose by 0.3 percent compared to the previous month, according to the US Department of Commerce on Thursday. Experts polled by the Reuters news agency, however, had expected a fall of 0.1 percent, following a decline of 0.2 percent in October.
At 3.1 percent, the rate of inflation continued to fall in November. Consumer prices are an important benchmark for the US Federal Reserve with regard to its monetary policy. Since the beginning of 2022, the Federal Reserve has raised interest rates from near zero to a range of 5.25% to 5.50% in order to curb high inflation. It recently held the monetary policy level constant for the third meeting in a row.
