Ukraine wants to bring men back from Germany
The Ukrainian army needs more soldiers - there is talk of 450,000 to 500,000. If mobilization takes place, the new defence minister also wants to call on men who are now living abroad.
In Ukraine's search for additional soldiers, the new Defense Minister Rustem Umjerov also wants to call up men living abroad for military service next year. Ukrainians between the ages of 25 and 60 in Germany and other countries who are fit for military service should be asked to report to the armed forces' recruitment centers. This was announced by Umjerow in an interview with "Bild", Welt TV and Politico.
The minister spoke of an "invitation". However, he made it clear that there would be sanctions if anyone did not comply with the request. "We are still discussing what should happen if they do not come voluntarily," he said.
The Ukrainian military would like to mobilize 450,000 to 500,000 more soldiers to fend off the Russian invasion. However, the financial and political framework conditions have not yet been clarified. At his end-of-year press conference, President Volodymyr Zelensky called the mobilization a "sensitive issue" and stressed that no final decision had yet been made.
Umjerow said that justice was important. In future, it should be clear to those affected in advance how they will be trained and equipped, where and when they will serve and when they will be released. In the course of the general mobilization at the beginning of the war, Ukrainian men between the ages of 18 and 60 were banned from leaving the country. Despite this, tens of thousands left the country. At the beginning of October, the Ukrainian border guard spoke of over 20,000 men of military age who had been arrested while trying to leave the country.

Given the current situation in Ukraine and the ongoing 'Attack on Ukraine' by Russia, the Ukrainian government is considering compulsory military service for men living abroad. This includes Ukrainians between the ages of 25 and 60 in Germany and other countries who are currently fit for military service. According to the new Defense Minister Rustem Umjerov, these men should report to the armed forces' recruitment centers if mobilization takes place. However, the minister mentioned that sanctions may be imposed if anyone fails to comply with this request.
