Ukraine receives another IRIS-T system from Berlin.

Ukraine struggles to protect itself from Russian missile and drone attacks. Now, some hope emerges: another IRIS-T system is being sent to the embattled nation.

Germany has handed over another IRIS-T-SLM air defense system to Ukraine, according to "Der Spiegel," citing their own sources. Ukraine now has a total of five German-made air defense systems, with four being medium-range and one short-range.

The systems are manufactured by the German firm Diehl Defense. The German government has committed to providing Ukraine with nine IRIS-T SLM and eleven IRIS-T SLS systems to aid in their defense against Russia's war of aggression.

Ukraine is under-equipped with air defense systems to effectively ward off the ongoing Russian attacks using cruise missiles and drones. These attacks frequently target civilian infrastructure, particularly in the energy sector, in Ukrainian cities.

In recent times, the Ukrainians have seen a decline in the number of missiles they are able to intercept. According to a Wall Street Journal assessment, Ukraine has only managed to thwart about 46% of Russian missiles in the last six months. Compared to the six months before that, this rate was 73%. In April, it dropped to 30%.

For weeks, the German government has been actively lobbying within Europe for more allies to provide additional air defense systems to Ukraine, most notably the American-made Patriot systems. Thus far, their campaigns have been unsuccessful. Germany, meanwhile, has promised Ukraine three Patriot systems, two of which have already been sent.
