Ukraine deploys drones to target Russian Tatarstan

Once again, Ukraine is launching attacks on targets within the Russian Republic of Tatarstan using long-range drones. Consequentially, airports in the region have had to stop operations temporarily due to the alleged air raid. Details on potential damages are scarce.

Kazan and Nizhnekamsk, Russian airports located in the constituent republic of Tatarstan, had to halt operations momentarily owing to drone attacks from Ukraine. The media reported explosions and the downing of a Ukrainian Aeropract A-22 light aircraft that's been modified into an unmanned missile. However, the Russian Ministry of Defense only confirmed the elimination of an unnamed drone. A while later, operations resumed at the airports.

The Ukrainian military intelligence service HUR took responsibility for the attacks in an interview with the Kyiv Independent portal. Their objective was to strike Russian military installations. A source from the intelligence service revealed that the drones had made it to Kazan and Nizhnekamsk, but provided no further detail regarding the potential impact.

Russian Telegram channels circulated footage of a drone with smoke billowing over Nizhnekamsk. Yelabuga's Mayor, Rustem Nuriev, disclosed that the drone had been downed in the Yelabuga district. Yelabuga is approximately 1,200 kilometers away from the Russian-Ukrainian border.

In the past, Tatarstan had experienced drone attacks by Ukraine. The airport in Kazan had even temporarily closed. Based on local news, several companies in Tatarstan strategized evacuations due to the perceived risk.

The BRICS summit, which takes place in October 22 to 24 in Kazan, was affected by the air raid. Hosted by Russia this year, the summit is a yearly gathering of the emerging economic powers. The acronym BRICS stands for Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Nonetheless, more countries have become part of this informal alliance.
