A surge in tourist numbers ever since the Taliban regained control
Tourism in Bamian province began flourishing even before the Taliban took control again. Despite the Islamists battling the Afghan government supported by international troops back then, the area was considered one of the safest and most peaceful places in the country. Hundreds of locals visited the Band-e Amir National Park or the vestiges of two monumental statues of Buddha, remnants of Afghanistan's pre-Islamic history. After the Taliban seized power in 2021 and withdrew international troops, local authorities observed an increase in foreign tourists.
The security situation in Bamian has considerably improved since the end of the conflict. Nevertheless, sporadic attacks continue to occur. The Islamic State (IS) terrorist militia takes responsibility for most of these. The militia sees the Shiite minority in the country as apostates and hold deep animosity towards them. So far, no organization has claimed responsibility for the assault on the tourists.
