Timothée Chalamet thought Johnny Depp was "brave"
Next week, "Wonka", a new film starring Timothée Chalamet, will be released in German cinemas - in a role that Johnny Depp has also played. At the premiere in London, however, Chalamet explained that it was not him who inspired him for this project.
On Wednesday evening, Paul King's new film "Wonka" celebrated its premiere in London before it is released in cinemas in Germany on December 7. Timothée Chalamet was also present on the red carpet, as the 27-year-old has taken on the title role in the film. In an interview with the US magazine "E! News" on the sidelines of the event, he revealed how he prepared for the character of Willy Wonka.
He did not rely on Johnny Depp, who played Wonka in the 2005 film "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". Instead, he used the 1971 film "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" with Gene Wilder as a source of inspiration. Accordingly, he did not ask Johnny Depp for advice, Chalamet explained when asked by the reporter. "I love the Gene Wilder version. I saw that first ... Technically, because I grew up with it." The Hollywood star explained that Depp's version was released in cinemas when he was "ten or eleven years old" and described his interpretation as "very brave".
"I had to loosen up"
Timothée Chalamet also described to People magazine how this project differed from his previous ones. "The challenge was to live and love the particular tone. I realized that everything I'd worked on before had a grounded seriousness, and here I had to loosen up and play like I did in high school." He first had to learn that again.
Incidentally, Chamalet did not have to audition for "Wonka", as director King explained in an interview with the US magazine "Rolling Stone" back in the summer. "He got a direct offer because he's great and, in my opinion, the only person who could play the role. Because Timothée Chalamet and his life are so absurd. His high school musical performances are on YouTube and have hundreds of thousands of views." As a long-time fan of Chalamet, he therefore knew that he could "sing and dance really well".
It is not known whether this was also what made Kylie Jenner go weak at the knees, but Timothée Chalamet and Kim Kardashian's half-sister have been dating for a while. Although she is not said to have walked the red carpet with him in London, she was probably spotted at his side at the after-show party.
Timothée Chalamet praised Johnny Depp's "brave" performance in the 2005 film "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," which he watched when he was ten or eleven. Despite this, Chalamet drew inspiration from the 1971 film "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" starring Gene Wilder for his role in the upcoming "Wonka" movie.
