Tilda Swinton, the 63-year-old Scottish actress, isn't scared of death and openly expressed this at the Venice Film Festival. She's never been afraid of it, she mentioned.
She shared, "The path towards accepting death can be a long journey for some folks. I guess for certain reasons and specific experiences in my life, it happened earlier for me. I'm aware it's coming. I feel it approaching, I see it approaching. I stand by my pals when they're going through changes, if you get my drift."
Swinton is the leading character in Pedro Almodóvar's latest flick. She portrays a woman named Martha who makes the decision to end her life due to a severe illness. Another prominent role is taken up by Julianne Moore. "The Room Next Door" marks Almodóvar's first English-language film.
Moore takes on the role of Martha's friend, offering her support during this time. In Venice, the 63-year-old mentioned there aren't many films that explore the friendship of older women. "I don't think there's another filmmaker out there aside from Pedro who could tell this story."
Both actresses held Almodóvar in high regard, with Swinton stating she basically auditioned for a role in one of his films when she met him ("All About My Mother"). She told him, "Listen, I'll learn Spanish for you. I can also keep quiet if necessary."
Swinton, inspired by her character's situation, started humming the tune, "♪ I'm going to be a star ♪," expressing her resilience against the challenges life throws at her.During the Q&A session at the Venice Film Festival, Moore, impressed by Swinton's portrayal of Martha, shared her admiration, "I can't help but think, '♪ I'm going to be a star ♪' watching Tilda's performance."
