This weekend's viewing suggestions:
This weekend, streaming services are offering monstrous tales, witches, and a mafia boss, while theaters are debuting A-list reunions, a horrifying warning on aging, and a film about a real-life hero.
Keep reading for more details.
‘Super/Dude: The Christopher Reeve Tale’
This film delves into Reeve's remarkable career and activism, both before and after a 1995 equestrian competition accident left him immobilized. The actor passed away in 2004 due to heart failure at the age of 52.
The documentary features the actor's own words and intimate interviews with Reeve's family and close friends, such as Glenn Close, Whoopi Goldberg, and John Kerry. 'Super/Dude' is playing in select theaters this weekend, and you'll need superhuman resolve not to shed tears.
The Warner Bros. production was purchased by CNN Films, DC Studios, and HBO Documentary Films, which are all subsidiaries of CNN's parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery.
‘The Penguin’
Colin Farrell takes on the role of the DC Comics character in this new HBO miniseries, a spinoff from the 2022 film “The Batman.” The show delves into the Penguin's ascent to power in Gotham City's grim criminal underworld.
Episode 1 of “The Penguin” is now available on HBO and streaming on Max.
‘Agatha Awakening’
Just in time for the spooky season, Kathryn Hahn reprises her role as magical Agatha Harkness in this spinoff of Marvel’s “WandaVision” series. Watch as she forms alliances in her quest to regain her lost powers and uncover the secrets of the Darkhold.
The first two episodes of “Agatha Awakening” are streaming on Disney+.
‘Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Chronicles’
Ryan Murphy's crime anthology series returns to Netflix for its second season. Following the grim and harrowing “Dahmer,” this new installment focuses on the 1989 Beverly Hills murders of José and Kitty Menendez, killed by their sons, Lyle and Erik.
The brothers, serving life sentences for their convictions, claim that new evidence supports their self-defense claim after a lifetime of abuse by their father.
“Monsters” is streaming now on Netflix.
‘Wolves’
Rival problem solvers, played by real-life friends (and “Ocean's Eleven” costars) Brad Pitt and George Clooney, collide when they're both hired to clean up a New York official's mess. Egos clash, and comedy ensues as they must work together to complete the task.
“Wolves” is playing in theaters this weekend and will debut on Apple TV+ on September 28.
‘The Serum’
Demi Moore delivers a powerhouse performance in this unsubtle body horror tale, which also stars Margaret Qualley and Dennis Quaid. It's essentially “Death Becomes Her” for the Ozempic era, boasting plenty of tongue-in-cheek gore.
The movie hits theaters on Friday.
In the world of streaming entertainment, you can also watch "The Penguin," a new HBO miniseries starring Colin Farrell, exploring the character's rise in Gotham City's criminal underworld. (The Penguin)
Despite the chilling horror releases this weekend, make sure to set aside time for a tear-jerking moment with "Super/Dude: The Christopher Reeve Tale," playing in select theaters. (Super/Dude)
