Arnold Schwarzenegger - This is how the Americans received him
Arnold Schwarzenegger (76) spreads Christmas cheer in Los Angeles. As part of a charity campaign in the Boyle Heights district, volunteers handed out thousands of toys for needy children at a youth center. Among them was the Hollywood star. In a video that Schwarzenegger shared on social media, he explained how he was inspired to get involved in helping others: When he had just moved to the USA in the late 1960s, people from his gym had picked him up at the time.
How Schwarzenegger was received in America
Schwarzenegger says in the video: "When I came to this country, my friends at Gold's Gym had a big Christmas for me and invited me to their house. It was fantastic." The action star continued: "They gave me Christmas presents and they had this beautiful Christmas tree." He felt "so included here in America", "even though I was a foreigner and had just come to this country", he recalls.
Schwarzenegger now wants to pass this feeling on to other people. He will never forget that kind of kindness and belonging, "and that's why I wanted to do the same thing when I had the money," he added. "That's why I've been coming to the youth center for over 30 years, handing out gifts and making donations," said the actor and former governor of California. "It makes me feel good that I can share this kindness and inspire other people to do the same."
In the USA for 55 years, a US citizen for 40 years
Arnold Schwarzenegger, born in Styria, Austria, in 1947, emigrated to the USA in 1968. It was only in September that he celebrated on Instagram that he has held US citizenship for exactly 40 years. September 16, 1983 was "one of the proudest days of my life", the actor wrote in his post.
