Bartender-lady - They are suspected of stealing the gorilla Ruma from Leipzig Zoo: Police arrest suspects

Approximally four months after the theft of a Barbary macaque from Leipzig Zoo, the police have located the suspected perpetrators. This group is also being investigated for other serious crimes. During searches related to this case, mobile phone images were found showing the suspects with the Barbary macaque. The suspects are currently in pre-trial detention, the police announced.

The group is in pre-trial detention, as the officers announced in the Saxon city on Thursday.

The monkey was taken to a nearby house

The 15-year-old female Barbary macaque Ruma was stolen from its enclosure on Easter Sunday night. Four days later, a jogger discovered the animal on a tree in the Leipzig district of Reudnitz. A team from the zoo arrived and managed to catch the monkey, which had meanwhile run to a nearby multi-family house, with a net. The monkey was doing well. It is assumed that it was released near the discovery site at that time, they said at the time.

The police are investigating due to suspicion of a particularly serious theft. It still needs to be clarified how many people from the circle of suspects were actually involved in the break-in at the zoo and the monkey theft, said a spokeswoman.

The suspects were discovered with the stolen Barbary macaque in the images recovered from their mobile phones during the searches. The monkey was found in a nearby house four days after its theft, safely hidden in a multi-family building.
