"Squid Game: The Challenge" - The reality game show gets a second season
Netflix has proven with "Squid Game: The Challenge" that a successful series can also be adapted as a reality game show. Just in time for the show's grand finale on Thursday (December 7), the streaming service has announced that there will be a sequel. Brave "Squid Game" fans can now apply to take part in the game show. As in season one, there is a prize of 4.56 million US dollars at stake.
This is what "Squid Game: The Challenge" is all about
In the Netflix reality show, 456 players compete against each other. They have to master games inspired by the original series"Squ id Game". In the challenges, their strategies, alliances and character are put to the test. Gradually, more and more competitors are eliminated.
The format recently made headlines because several candidates made serious allegations after the start of season one in November and are demanding compensation. The contestants claim that they suffered injuries during the filming of the new show due to poor standards - including hypothermia and nerve damage.
There had already been media reports about the filming at the beginning of the year. During filming in the UK, the participants had to endure temperatures of -3 degrees Celsius, for example, as the Sun reported in January, citing participants. It was an "icy nightmare" and at least one exhausted contestant allegedly had to be carried off on a stretcher, according to an eyewitness.
In February, "Rolling Stone" spoke of "inhumane conditions". At least ten people are said to have collapsed during the shoot. During the "red light, green light" game familiar from the original, the candidates spent "up to nine hours in a freezing hangar". Netflix itself confirmed that three participants required medical treatment.
This is the hit series that serves as the basis
The dark South Korean thriller series "Squid Game" became a huge success for streaming market leader Netflix in 2021. The project by creator, writer and director Hwang Dong-hyuk (52) still leads the eternal ranking of the most successful non-English-language series on Netflix to date by a huge margin. The second "Squid Game" season will probably not be released until 2025.
